Lesson In Truth

Revelation 2:12-17

Church of Pergamum

• The place where Satan lives.

• The place where they lived.

• Yet, they remained true to their faith.

But . . .

• Some were giving into Pergamum.

• The real problem: they had no theological convictions.

Lessons of truth:

1) Important to know what and why you believe.

1 Peter 3:15, Eph. 4:13-14

2) Test what you hear.

Galatians 1:6, Acts 17:11

3) Synchronize your life.

Take Home Idea: Truth matters, so walk in God’s truth.

“Pergamum: Lesson in Truth” Small Group Questions

Revelation 2:12-17

As a kid, where was the local “haunted house” in your town? Did you ever dare to go in?

Review Pastor Joel's sermon and Take Home Idea. What struck you about the sermon?

What do you have questions about?

From Pastor Joel’s sermon – what was the city of Pergamum known for? Because of those things, what pressures do you think the Christians in Pergamum were facing?

At what point are they strong? Why does Jesus mention Antipas?

At what point is this church failing? What was Balaam known for? What did the teachings of the Nicolaitans include? How had those teachings crept into the church?

Which do you think is easier to endure: persecution by enemies or seduction by the culture? Why?

Why is the title by which Christ reveals himself so appropriate for these Christians?

What do you think is the meaning of the “hidden manna” and “white stone” in v. 17?

What cultural influences distract you from your relationship with Christ?

How will you protect the truth and pursue the truth? How will you prevent being seduced by the cultural around you?

Of the three lessons of truth (from Pastor Joel’s sermon) which one is more difficult for you to do? Why?

Close this time sharing and praying together as a group.
