God is Sufficient
August 20, 2023 Speaker: Paul Anleitner Series: Encountering God
The problem:
What are we to do with the sense that our satisfaction in life can feel so fleeting and insufficient?
- Key Passage 1: Romans 1:20-25
- Key Passage Idea: The fruit of disordered worship is dysfunction.
- When we treat the true, good, and beautiful finite things in God’s creation as sufficient for satisfying our infinite longings, they become idols.
- The ache we experience for the Infinite is the image of God within our human nature, longing for union to its source and home in God.
The solution:
God is inviting us to "partake in the divine nature."
- Key Passage 2: 2 Peter 1:3-4
Addressing misconceptions about the solution:
- Knowing a propositional truth about God isn’t the same kind of knowing as participating with God. (See James 2:19)
- We are finite, and God is infinite. Satisfaction in God is an infinite journey.
Our hope in Christ:
Key Passage: 2 Corinthians 3:17-18
