How does Jonah respond to God’s great mercy and rescue?
- Jonah is genuinely grateful to God for rescuing him from death (2.2, 7, 9).
- But, Jonah gives no sign of remorse or repentance (2.2-4, 9).
- There is no evidence (in this or any chapter) that Jonah believes he has done wrong.
- Jonah reluctantly accepts that he cannot escape God’s call (3.1-3).
Application:
- YHWH is the sovereign God over all creation, and he is a gracious and compassionate God.
- Jonah is remarkably unworthy of God’s mercy, but God still shows him mercy.
