More Than a Fish Story

The prophet Jonah is sent to Nineveh, but the book of Jonah is written to and for God’s people - Israel. 

• The story is about Jonah and Nineveh, but the message is for Israel - and us!

Jonah is prophecy in the form of a narrative story (cf. 2 Sam 12). 

• To help the audience see their sin so that they might repent (cf. 2 Sam. 12.7, 13).

Jonah is written to correct Israel’s misunderstanding of God’s character & their opposition to his purposes.

• The goal is to produce repentance and wholehearted allegiance to God and his redemptive plan. 

Application

• No one is beyond the mercy of our God, not even our worst enemies.
• God’s people should want his plan to succeed.
