What do we mean by “God”?

Misconceptions of what “God” means

• God is not a super-being in an arena of other beings.
• God is not the supernatural “watchmaker” of the universe.

What should we mean?

• God is more than the answer to “how?” God is the answer to “why?”
• God is the ground of all existence and being, sustaining this very moment.

What does this mean for you?

• There is no “secular” ground.
• Sin is the misuse of God’s good and loving gift.
• If the ultimate “WHY” looks like Christ, then shouldn’t yours?

1. How did common, modern conceptions of “God” become so different from what our pre-modern Christian ancestors believed?
2. If someone’s ultimate “WHY” answer is their “God”, what are some of the false “gods” that are common wrong answers in our day to that ultimate question of “WHY”?
