The Righteous Shoot
Speaker: Jay Pound Series: When Heaven Comes Down Scripture: Isaiah 11:1–10
How do we get from the judgment of Isaiah 6 to the joy of Isaiah 12?
- God will raise up a shoot (a new King!) from the stump of Jesse (11.1)
- And God’s Spirit will rest on him (11.2).
- He will be perfectly and fully equipped for rule (11.2, cf. Prov. 1.1-7).
- He will rule not according to his own judgment, but out of fear of the Lord (11.3-5).
- He will be a banner of salvation for the nations (11.10)
Application
- The banner of salvation has been raised - and the nations are coming! (Rom. 15.12).
- The King has come, his Kingdom is coming (cf. Rv. 21-22).
Discussion Questions:
- Where do you see or experience injustice and corruption in the world today that makes you long for God to put things right?
- Where specifically (in the gospels) do you see Jesus demonstrating the qualities of Isa. 2.2?
- Put yourself in the apostle Paul’s shoes, why does he see his ministry as a fulfillment of Isa. 11.10? (see Romans 15.12).
