Speaker: Jay Pound Series: Ruth Scripture: Ruth 1:1– 4:22

Big themes from the book of Ruth

  • Don’t underestimate the plan and power of God (4.17).
    • God is always doing something more and bigger than we can see or grasp (4.18-22).
  • God is not always impressed by what impresses us (4.15b).
    • In this story, the person who embodies and inspires covenant loyalty in others is a woman and a foreigner (2.11-12; 3.10-11).
  • Loyalty to Yahweh should make us generous and kind toward others (4.9-10).
    • Don’t underestimate the power of simple goodness (1.16-18; 2.10).

Discussion Questions

  • What surprised you most about the book of Ruth?
  • Share a time when you were on the receiving end of simple goodness. Why do moments like that leave such an impact?
  • We are usually focused on the events right in front of us. How might reminding ourselves of the larger plan of God change our perspective and attitude?
