True Covenant Loyalty
Speaker: Jay Pound Series: How God Became King Scripture: Matthew 5:17–48
How do we get from the present, broken reality to a Kingdom where the beatitudes are a reality?
- Not imposed from outside by violence, but through transformation from the inside (13-16).
- Jesus’ followers are God’s lamps and God’s salt (13-16).
What does it mean to be salt & light?
- It means starting with yourself (20, 23-34, 30, etc.).
- To live with true covenant loyalty wherever God sends you (17-20).
Application:
- Jesus fulfills the Torah by interpreting it rightly and living it fully.
- Jesus calls us to embody the Kingdom through covenant loyalty
Discussion Questions:
- How does the covenant loyalty described by Jesus differ from the rule-following model of righteousness exemplified by the Pharisees?
- Where do you feel challenged by these teachings today? What would it look like to respond with greater covenant loyalty in that situation?
- You are God’s lamp - where has he placed you this season?
