The Guide
Speaker: Jay Pound Series: The Guide Topic: Old Testament Law Scripture: Genesis 12:1–3, Exodus 19:5–6
How should we as Christians relate to the Old Testament Law?
- We need to change our paradigm: the law is a guide not a fence.
- The point of a fence is to keep you where you are.
- The point of a guide is to move you toward a goal.
- God has a plan: he wants to bless all peoples on the earth through Abraham and his descendants (Gn. 12.1-3).
- The law is the guide that will take them from who they are to who God has called them to be: a nation of priests (Ex.19.5-6).
- Case Study: Wandering & Distressed Livestock (Dt. 22.1-4; Ex. 23.4-5).
- Dt. 22.1-4: Be good to your neighbors.
- Ex. 23.4-5: Be good to those who hate you.
We are not under the law, but it is still a wise and reliable guide for those who want to partner with God in his kingdom purposes.
