Jesus Gets Us: Love
Reflect:
What moments in your life have made you feel the strongest sense of being loved?
Do those experiences of love have any deeper meaning?
The challenge:
One dominant story in our culture says that love has no real meaning, but what does the Christian story have to say about love?
Biblical focus:
Love is a central theme in the New Testament writings attributed to John (often called the “Johannine literature”). Use the space below for any notes on the biblical texts we explore today from John’s theology.
Big Idea:
Our finite experiences of love are a real, and yet partial, taste of the ininite source of love in Christ.
Some examples of what love looks like in the ministry & teaching of Jesus recorded in John’s Gospel:
-
sharing in a Friend’s grief (John 11:33-36)
-
Reaching out to those on the margins (John 4:7-26)
-
bringing healing to the hopeless (John 5:1-15)
-
“lowered status” service (John 13:1-17 )
-
Forgiving someone (John 21:15-19)
“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Jesus in John 15:12-13
