Peter’s Story: 

John 13.36-38: Peter the self-confident disciple

• Peter thinks of himself as a bold and courageous follower of Jesus (37)

John 18.15-17, 25-27: Peter the devastated disciple

• Despite all his earlier confidence, Peter denies even knowing Jesus (18.17, 25-26)

John 21: Peter the humble disciple

• Jesus offers a confidence rooted not in his ability, but in Jesus’ calling and power (21.18-19)

Jesus does not offer a way back into false confidence, but forward into the humility and peace that comes from trusting a good and faithful God.
