Biography/Description of Ministry
Rick and Becky Mackey both grew up in pastors' homes and accepted Jesus as their Savior as children. They count it a blessing to have grown up in strong Christian families.
Rick attended Cedarville College and earned a degree in Accounting with a minor in Bible. After graduating, he attended Tentmakers Youth Ministry Training in Minneapolis. He then served as our youth pastor from 1991 to 1997. Toward the end of his ministry here, Rick led our first missions trip to the Dominican Republic in 1997.
Becky attended Iowa State University, earning a degree in Psychology with a minor in Spanish. She continued her studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and received a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology in 1992.
Rick and Becky met in Minneapolis while he was at First Free and she was a counselor at Nystrom and Associates in New Brighton. They were married at First Free in 1995.
In 1997, Rick accepted a call to Calvary Evangelical Free Church in Rochester, Minnesota. While living in Rochester, they adopted two children, Benjamin and Elena. Rick continued to lead mission trips to Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic throughout his tenure at Calvary EFC.
Sensing a need for training lay leaders and church planters in rural Dominican Republic, Rick and Becky followed God's leading in 2005 and began preparing for missionary work. They joined a mission, United World Mission, that focuses on equipping nationals for church planting. UWM's focus fit perfectly with Rick and Becky's calling. In 2006 they left for Guatemala to study Spanish and began working in the rural mountains of the Dominican Republic in 2007.
The Mackeys' goal is to come alongside Dominicans who have a vision for planting rural churches and equip them to effectively do the work to which God has called them. They work one on one with local leaders, learning the vision God has placed in the nationals and helping the nationals do God's work. They lead discipleship Bible studies and seminary classes. They meet regularly with leaders helping them think strategically. The Mackeys' work is a ministry of Equipping others.
