Walking on Water
Pastor Joel Sutton, April 7, 2013
The Real Jesus, Do you Believe?
Lesson 1: Storms happen even when we are obedient. (Mark 6:45; Matt. 14:22)
Lesson 2: Jesus' eyes are on you in the midst of your storm. (Mark 6:48, Psalm 139)
Lesson 3: Jesus' presence is with you in your storm. (John 6:19-21)
Lesson 4: It is in the storm that you will come to know who Jesus is more deeply. (John 6:60; 66-69)
Take Home Idea: You will never know Jesus more deeply, than when you invite Him into the middle of your storm.
At what age did you learn to dive off the low board? Off the high board? What type of fear did you have to overcome?
Review each lesson Pastor Joel talked about. Do you see them? What do they mean?
Look at the Take Home idea. Explain it in your own words.
Read John 6:16-21. Read Matthew 14:22-33; Mark 6:47-52
What similarities do you find between the stories as they are told? What differences? Why the differences?
If you had been one of the disciples, what do you think Jesus was planning on doing? Walk around and meet you in Capernaum? Other? How would you have reacted if you saw Jesus walking on the water? Why?
Assuming you would have understood Jesus' words, "It is I" to also mean, "I Am" (cr. Exodus 3:14), what difference would that have made for you?
What did the disciples fail to see in the feeding of the 5000 that might have helped them here?
Why do you think John included this story pinched in-between the miracle of the feeding of the 5000 and the discourse of Jesus being the "Bread of Life"? What was Pastor Joel's suggestion?
Where are you straining on the oars and making very little headway?
How do you respond when storms whip up in your life? What difference does this story make as you face those times?
Relate a time in your life, when a storm came up and the result was you got to know Jesus more deeply because of it?
Close by sharing your answers and then praying together.
