This story is about those on the "inside".

Observation #1: Joseph and Mary's life are guided by the religious customs of the day. Vv. 22-24; 27; 39.

Observation #2: God is the God of surprises: He shows up at church.

            God surprises Anna. Vv. 36-38

      
            God surprises Simeon. Vv. 25 - 35

            God intends our religious practice and spiritual life to reinforce each other.

Observation #3: Simeon and Anna are "map studiers".

            So they have this expectancy.

            So they have this discernment.

Take Home Idea: Become a studier of the map; it will give you a depth of soul where God has room to dwell.
