What does Paul Mean?

A Profound Submission v. 1

  • The state's authority is derived from God. vs. 1-3

  • The state's role is a ministry from God. vv. 4,5

Are there any Exceptions?

  • Does God endorse every person who holds governmental office?
  • God grants those in authority freedom to exercise their authority and they don't always exercise it rightly.

  • Can believers ever resist the state's authority?
  • We are to submit, but only up to a point - where obedience to the state would be disobedience to God.

A Profound Response vv. 6-7

  • Be the best citizen.

Take Home Idea: Christians ought to be the best kind of citizens - submitting to government, honoring its representatives and as much as possible, doing what it says for us to do.

A Thought From God's Word:
Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. [Psalm 96:1-4]
