Christ will be a Banner. (Vv. 10, 12)

Banner: A standard, sign, or flag put in a conspicuous place for communicating important information.

Jesus Christ is a rallying point.

Christ, as a banner, will draw people of every nation home. (V. 10)

Christ, as a banner, will draw the remnant of Israel home.  (Vv. 11-16)

Two Great Truths:

  1. God is dependable.
  2. God is victorious.

Take Home Idea: Jesus, the one who came at Christmas, will one day bring all believers safely home.

Sermon-Based Discussion Questions

(For Small Groups, Adult Bible Fellowships, or Personal Use)

  1. What ideas and thoughts impacted you from the sermon? Was there anything that caught you off guard? Was there a theme that stirred you to worship differently?
  2. Why does Isaiah use the image that the Messiah (Jesus) will be a banner? What does that mean?
  3. What is it like for you to go "home"? Does that idea evoke a warm and positive response or a cold and negative response?
  4. Where is your favorite resting spot? What place can you go to in order to find peace and rest? Why that place? What is it about that place?
  5. Identify the images of God's redeeming of Israel from the slavery of Egypt in these verses. Why do you think Isaiah uses that imagery when he talks about Christ bringing the remnant of Israel home or to His place of rest?
  6. Look back at Isaiah 10:20-22. Who is the "remnant"? Why is the "remnant" so important to Christ's kingdom?
  7. How does Christ's "banner" affect your daily life? Is His Spirit leading and guiding your actions and shaping your heart?

A Thought From God's Word:
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. [Colossians 3:1-2]
