Goliath: A huge crisis.

Crisis reveals our spiritual character.

  • Saul: It reveals his fear. (v. 11)

  • David: It reveals his faith. (vv. 26, 32)

How can we prepare for those Goliath-like crises in our life?

  • Gain a proper perspective. (v. 26)

  • Learn the habit beforehand of living by faith. (vv. 34-37)

  • Be willing to be used by God, as you are. (v. 9-40, 50)

Take Home Idea: Your spiritual temperature is exposed in those Goliath-like crises in your life.

Sermon-Based Discussion Questions

What giants are drawn up against us in battle? How are they taunting you? Is your attitude toward them more like Saul's or David's? How does that attitude need to change?

What larger missionary purpose might be accomplished for God if you would turn that battle over to the Lord?

What's holding you back from taking the "bull by the horns"? What do you fear might happen if you turned and faced the enemy who taunts you and defies God? What's the "worst case scenario"? Having imagined that, now re-write the end result with God on your side.

What Goliaths are there in society defying God and Christ-followers? How can you, small and "unarmed," work to bring them down? What can your group do together?

A Thought From God's Word:
I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. [Philippians 3:10-14]
