May 2002
Dear parents of 4th, 5th or 6th
graders,
The semi-annual Children's Hike of First Evangelical Free Church
is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 1. It includes
Stockade, Adventure Club and Junior Church kids as well as their
friends (if OKed ahead of time.) As usual, we will meet at the
church parking lot at 9:00 am and take vans to the hiking place.
This year we are scheduled to hike around Pike Island (unless it is
under water). If it rains, we will still go, although we would
in that case spend more time INSIDE Fort Snelling.
Please have the children dress for the weather. Over the years
we have had rain, snow, sleet and hail, as well as varying degrees of
heat. Long pants are the best, even if it is warm, because
of
mosquitoes, nettles and poison ivy. Sun-screen and
insect-repellant are always a good idea and we will bring some for
those who forget. Shoes will invariably get wet so don't let
them wear the high priced pair.
We will feed the kids snacks and lunch. If anyone wants to
bring extra snacks, that is OK. We do appreciate that everyone
who has a back pack bring it. We all need to help carry the food
and we don't have enough packs for everyone. A donation of
$5.00 is appreciated (from those who are able) to help cover the cost
of food and the traditional pictures we always seem to take in
abundance. There is no charge for the captions.
At the end of the day we will take the children home, usually between
5:00 and 6:30 (a bit earlier if the leaders can't take it any
longer.) Special requests can be taken for drop off at other
locations, but YOU ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO TAKE ALL YOUR CHILDREN
BACK!
Often flora and fauna (dead, alive or in-between) are accumulated
over the course of the day, some accidental as in our frequent
informal "muddy shoe contests," and some on purpose as in,
"I'll trade you two tadpoles and a snake for your beaver
skull." If these treasures are not welcome in your house,
let your intrepid explorer know the rules ahead of time.
There will be enough adult helpers to carry Ross out if the need
should arise. The most that has happened to the children is the
rare bee sting and occasional nettle itches. The fearless
leader, however, seems to have occasional structural failures
(ever since the warranty expired) although basically everything has
now been fixed that might possibly cause a problem.
We will call to confirm for those who are on our list. If you
receive a copy of this letter in the mail, you are on the list.
If you get this message only from the First Free
website or from a friend, call us to confirm if your child is
coming.
